Can Exercise Make A Waistline Smaller?

What woman doesn’t want a smaller waistline? The desire to get a tiny waist motivates some women to head to the gym to whittle away their middle. They diligently do side-bends and other exercises that target their torso and are frustrated when they see no results. Can you really get a smaller waistline through exercise?

Can You Get a Smaller Waist Through Exercise?

Unfortunately, getting a smaller waistline is not as simple as doing exercises that target the middle. If you genetically have a large waistline, exercise won’t reduce it. On the other hand, if you’re carrying around too much body fat, and you have “love handles” covering your waist, you may have more success. But the answer isn’t to do side-bends and torso twists. Spot reduction is a myth. To achieve your goals you need to lower your body fat through diet and exercise. That means doing high-intensity exercise to burn away the excess body fat and eating a diet that’s conducive to weight loss. You won’t burn many calories doing torso twists.

Some people store excess fat around their waist due to high levels of cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal gland that lies just above the kidney. It’s been dubbed the “stress hormone” because it rises during times of stress. Some factors that increase cortisol levels are skipping meals, drinking excessive amounts of coffee, overtraining and not sleeping enough. Cortisol levels can also rise if you’re under chronic stress related to your job or other factors.

Some of these cortisol-raising factors you can control. One of the best ways to naturally reduce this hormone that adds inches to your waistline is to sleep seven to eight hours a night, eat regular meals, cut back on coffee and find ways to better deal with stress. Yoga and meditation are two excellent ways to relax and lower cortisol levels naturally.

What if You Naturally Have a Large Waistline?

If your build is such that you’re naturally large-waisted, and you’re not carrying around excess fat anywhere else, what are your options? One way to make your waistline appear smaller is to use weight-training to build up your shoulders. Strong shoulders give the illusion of a smaller waistline. Two of the best exercises for doing this are lateral raises using weights and upright rows. These exercises help to develop the medial portion of the deltoid muscle, which strengthens and widens the shoulder area. Wider shoulders will make your waistline look smaller by comparison.

Even if you don’t have a genetically small waist, you can still get firm, toned abdominals by eating healthy and doing a combination of abdominal strength-training exercises and fat-burning aerobics. This way you’ll still look great when you put on a swimsuit no matter what your waist size.

The Bottom Line?

You can’t spot reduce, but you can reduce overall body fat and firm your abdominals through exercise and diet. This will give you a sexier middle. Then work your shoulders to give the illusion of a smaller waistline. Then you’ll be ready to slip into a swimsuit.
